We have a reputation to be proud of... with happy, busy and empowered older citizens that will testify enthusiastically of fulfillment and professional care.

The Silwerkroon Centre started to operate in 1985 under the Pretoria Council for the Care of the Aged.

In 2007 the Centre was awarded their own NPO licence and started to function independently. The Silwerkroon Centre has rendered a unique service to the elderly for all these years. This service is aimed at empowering independent older persons to stay self-reliant as long as possible and to ensure that the elderly have access to information, education, counselling, affordable meals and programs to maintain active ageing.
The goal is provide opportunities that will promote the optimal level of social, physical, mental and emotional well-being of residents, with  the utmost respect, fairness and equitably at all times.


The Silwerkroon Centre promotes two main operational programs:


• ACTIVE AGING PROGRAM •
• HOME BASED CARE •


ABOUT THE ACTIVE AGING PROGRAM

The Silwerkroon Centre aims through Active Ageing Programs to improve and promote senior citizens' self-reliance, independence and the ability to live fulfilled lives.The Active Ageing Program promotes an optimal independent and active-living program for persons 60 years and older.

These services provide comprehensive support services to older persons who are still active and mobile and strives to prevent people from having to be institutionilised.

The following services are rendered:

~ Nutritious meals are provided every day of the week;
~ Fun and games events such as jukskei, darts, bingo, card games, finger snooker and scrabble;
~ Sing songs and socializing with peers;
~ A weekly Hobby Club where residents can interact with knitting, needlework, baking etc;
~ Fun walks from time to time to stay healthy and active;
~ Sport Day once a year when we compete against other Housing Schemes;
~ Daily transport to shopping malls, pension pay out points, doctors, hospitals and clinics;
~ Daily hairdressing service;
~ A second-hand clothing shop;
~ A Senior Service shop (Tuck-shop) to provide articles and groceries;
~ A fully functional library;
~ A bio kineticist offers exercises twice a week for optimum health and mobility;
~ Gospel song and praise meetings once a week;
~ Performances of a variety of artist are offered regulary towards entertainment and fundraising;
~ Monthly Birthday Tea Parties;
~ Fundraising Markets/Carnivals during the year towards fundraising;
~ Laundry services and household assistance;
~ Foot care once a month;
~ A Sister from Steve Biko Hospital brings prescriptions every 2 – 3 months;
~ Medical Doctor visits;
~ Nursing Assistant every Thursday to monitor health and blood pressure;
~ Economic empowerment programs: Fundraising for the Centre and for the members, (sales of home made vetkoek, pancakes, cakes and biscuits, jams and sewing);
~ Recreational programs: outings, entertainment, sport days, concerts;
~ Life Skills Programs, and motivational speakers;
~ Health Care Programs: Synexus researcher monitors and gives advice;
~ Sister on call;~ ProMed Ambulance Service;  
~ Audiologist hearing testing and advice.


ABOUT THE HOME BASED CARE PROGRAM

This program aims at prevention of compromising health conditions and to keep older persons from having to be referred to institutions for as long as possible through a home based care program.

The Silwerkroon Centre provides
~ Equitable, accessible and affordable frail care and promotes the rights of the elderly.

Home based care includes the following services
~ Deliver food to the frail and semi-frail older persons.
~ Motivate and help frail and semi-frail older persons to socialize with others and dedicated excercising,
~ Build partnerships with leaders & organizations in the community.
~ Identify & train volunteers to render the services and visit residents 3 – 5 times a week.
~ Co-ordinating, monitoring & networking with Steve Biko Hospital to visit residents at home – bringing their medicine, wound care, blood pressure and blood sugar monitoring, etc.
~ Continuous health education and administering and monitoring of medication.
~ Nail cutting, foot care and leg massages where neccessary.
~ Ensuring hygiene, hair care & washing of clothes
~ Providing daily house-hold tasks where neccessary
~ Transport services to clinics, hospitals and doctors.
~ Assisting with shopping and paying of monthly accounts.
~ Referrals to doctors, clinics, hospitals and old age homes when necessary.
~ Interaction and networking with the children/family of the frail older persons.
